The fragmentary nature of Leonardo’s pages necessitates, in any research project on the Vincian Master, a direct confrontation with gaps and, consequently, with the challenge of reconstructing missing elements. The Conference aims to focus on a working method that, particularly in the field of Leonardo studies, has proven fundamental for the realization of significant volumes and research projects. Studies — whether direct or indirect — of Leonardo’s pages, from the originals to the apographs, have produced milestone examples, such as the repositioning of the Windsor fragments in relation to the pages of the Codex Atlanticus, the reconstruction of Leonardo’s lost Libro A, or the analysis of lost texts retrievable in the Ambrosian apographs or in the Codex Corazza, up to the ‘recovery’ of Leonardo’s library.
The diversity of topics addressed by Leonardo, which correspond to many modern disciplinary fields, allows the proposed theme to be explored from multiple perspectives and through topics that are not exclusively reserved for specialists.
Indeed, the outlined focal points also make it possible to include the broader issue of the reception of Leonardo’s knowledge up to the contemporary age and across different geographical and historiographical contexts. These have led, on the one hand, to the compilation and publication of thematic textual surveys — such as in the case of the Treatise on Painting or Del moto e misura dell’acqua — entirely conceived as reconstructions of lost Vincian texts, and on the other, to the study and dissemination of Leonardo’s legacy through the analysis of the artistic, scientific, and technical thought of his followers over the centuries.
Now more than ever, these broad research perspectives, thanks to the digital publication of Leonardo’s codices and drawings, as well as the works of professionals and theorists in the fields of art, architecture, science, and engineering between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries, can be approached in a transdisciplinary manner.
The publication of the speakers’ contributions is planned in the journal Achademia Leonardi Vinci, which is being reissued thanks to the support of CIRICE and FedOA University Press of the Federico II University.
